So what makes an EcoBoost engine different from any regular internal combustion engine?
First of all, the engine itself is not as heavy as a traditional engine. EcoBoost engines are made primarily with aluminum, which makes them lighter. They also have a special coating to reduce friction — high friction makes engines work harder and use more fuel, so this coating makes the engine more efficient and reduces the emissions caused by extra fuel consumption. All EcoBoost engines are equipped with a turbocharger, which helps to achieve the same horsepower as a conventional engine but with less displacement. So while the engine may be smaller, it is actually more powerful than a conventional internal combustion engine.
In order to function, any internal combustion engine requires air, fuel, and sparks from the spark plugs. The EcoBoost engine is no exception to this rule, but its direct injection feature brings fuel and air into the equation with less effort required from the engine. In a normal engine, fuel enters the cylinder once per cycle to cause the combustion that powers the engine. With an EcoBoost engine, direct injection enables multiple small fuel injections into the cylinder per cycle, and it is injected at high pressure so that less fuel ends up being consumed.
