5 Errors to Avoid When Selecting a Custom Toll-Free Number

Are you interested in choosing a vanity phone number for your company?

Sooner or later, if you’re a mid- to large-size company, you’ll have to confront the issue of picking out a toll-free number. This is a decision you’ll have to live with for quite some time, so it’s important that you make the right one.

That being said, here are five tips for selecting an 800 vanity number.

1. Number-Word Hybrid

This is absolutely the most significant mistake business owners make. 1-800-493-TINT is nowhere near as valuable as 1-800-TINTING. People can remember words, not numbers. A hybrid phone number rapidly becomes 1-800-something-something-something TINT to the prospective customer. A hybrid may save you a few dollars, but as time goes by, you’ll waste thousands of dollars on advertising and marketing… not even counting the thousands of dollars unclaimed from the business opportunities that never happened.

2. 800 & 888 vs. 877 & 866

Whenever possible, constantly try to establish yourself with an 800 vanity name number. It is by far what most people are accustomed to. When that is impossible, 888 is the next best choice. Even though it’s not as good as 800, it’s still much better than 877 and 866. Try not to use 877 unless as a last resort because you may lose some of your phone calls to misdialed numbers since the general public isn’t yet familiar with 877 being a toll-free prefix. Don’t ever use 866 because you could possibly lose as much as a third of your calls.



3. Vanity Name Choice

Select a phone number that either spells out your industry (e.g. 1-800-ROOFCARE, 1-800-EYESIGHT, 1-800-INSURANCE) or describes/strengthens the marketing information you are attempting to convey (e.g. Fabulous High Heel Shoes- 1-800-FABULOUS). Don’t spell out your business name unless you are confident everyone knows it. Stewart’s Roofing is significantly better off with 1-800-ROOF CARE than 1-800-STEWART, which could represent just about anything.

4. Spelling

The number must be easy to spell. Don’t use “Q” or “Z” as they have only just lately been added to modern day phone keypads.



5. Marketing and Branding

Don’t be exclusive where you use your toll-free number. Make it the front door to your business for everything you do that the public has contact with. Selective use for just radio commercials, for instance, will never get you the best success overall. There is a purpose why everything FedEx does features the 1-800-Go FedEx phone number on it. Same goes for UPS with 1-800-PICK UPS, they know what great benefit it is to them.

By merely staying away from these five mistakes, you will be heading down the path to excellent marketing and advertising execution.
