Orlando Florida Biking: Casselberry’s Friendly Neighborhood Bike Trails

Casselberry, Florida is a residential and commercial community located north of Orlando in Seminole County, Florida. With over 30 lakes and ponds and 14 parks, the city offers myriad recreational opportunities, including two good neighborhood bicycling trails linking homes, schools, parks, and businesses. The city recognizes the importance of alternative transportation options for its residents and has developed a Bicycle Master Plan for a city-wide trail network.

Kewannee Trail

The Kewannee Trail, a 1.7 mile long, 14 foot wide paved trail, starts at Cassell Creek Blvd. at SR 436 in Casselberry, Florida and goes along the Howell Canal to Oxford Road in Fern Park, Florida. Kewannee Park at the midpoint serves as trailhead. The park has parking, restrooms, a playground and athletic fields, and also a scenic boardwalk through wetlands that offers a slice of natural Florida. Near the park, a spur off the Kewannee Trail links to the Wirz Trail.

The trail is a pleasant ride along the canal and past residential neighborhoods. It runs through the English Woods and Indian Woods residential communities, and provides an alternate route to English Estates Elementary School, shopping at Oxford Road and SR 436, the Seminole County Branch Library on Oxford Road, and the skateway at Cassel Creek Blvd.

Wirz Trail

The Wirz Trail has two sections completed. Start from either the trailhead at Winter Park Drive, or at Wirz Park. The two sections are connected by a bike-friendly street route.

The Winter Park Drive trailhead has parking, benches, and water. This section of trail is about 1.7 miles, starting out over a boardwalk and continuing behind South Seminole Middle and Casselberry Elementary Schools and to Crystal Bowl Park. From here is also a link to Casselberry’s Dew Drop Park. Continuing on the Wirz Trail, the trail crosses residential streets while winding along behind homes. At the end of this section, follow the road markings and signs along Laurel Way, Brittany Circle and Wilshire Drive to Wirz Park.

The trail at Wirz Park runs about 2 miles. The park has parking, restrooms, a swimming pool and athletic fields; the 0.6 mile nature trail around the park has been incorporated as part of the Wirz Trail. Across Mark David Blvd. the trail continues out to Winter Park Drive, along Cannon Way, Brighton Drive, and Wilshire Blvd. to SR 436; conveniently located at the corner is a bike shop! Across 436 at the end of Wilshire Blvd. the Wirz Trail links with the Kewannee Trail.
