ProForm 980 Audio Trainer Treadmill Review

ProForm always takes a hit from me for not warrantying any of their machines well. But with the ProForm 980 Audio Trainer they have produced a value priced machine which has many great features and might just make a great addition to your home, assuming you are able to get an extended 3rd party warranty.

The Ifit personal trainer system is obviously the star here. With a sound system built of the purpose of using the Ifit system to receive audio cues during the users workout and 16 Ifit programs built into the machine. This machine uses the Ifit cards which I believe are available for around $20 last time I checked and lave something like 30 workouts on each.

The sound system can also be used with your Ipod to blast your favorite music while you work out. Another star feature of this machine is adjustable cushioning. Now you can choose how firm you want your foot falls to feel, a feature usually reserved for machines with much larger price tags.

Enjoyable, Despite Some Flaws.

Warranty is always a concern when it comes to any Icon brand. At least this machine does carry a lifetime Frame and Motor warranty. The materials used on this machine aren’t the best, and motor is just slightly underpowered when using this machine at high speeds. And of course, I always prefer a treadmill to be a runner, so a 55″ belt legnth is usually an automatic demerit.

Now that I’ve said that, the 980 Audio is actually very enjoyable to use. It is relatively quite, fairly strong, and overall quite smooth. Its’ speakers offer quality sound and help to deliver the Ifit personal training system which is as always a value when included on an Icon machine. The inclusion of adjustable cushioning adds a sense of luxury to a machine which commonly sells for under $800.

Don’t expect the parts to last forever, but the features and price of this machine almost make me forget the fact that Icon is still regarded as a poor performing manufacturer after years of growing quality concerns and a few key recalls. It is an enjoyable machine to use and is great for most type of excersize, but as always a 55″ belt length is not enough for most taller individuals to feel comfortable running on this machine. Overall, this machine is well finished and seems planned.

The Right Features And The Right Price

With speakers, an OK motor, and the inclusion of the Ifit system, ProForm has produced a pretty good machine. It most definitely carries the stigma of a company known for problems in quality, but it does not have the worst track record so far.

The ProForm 980 Audio Trainer is a great machine for getting in shape, and when using the Ifit system you can get a great workout without having to worry about all the details such as time, speed and incline, the machine will do those things for you.
